“The aim is not mastery, but creation”
-Rest in eternal peace, Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quinones 1955-2020-
Shway-Style was created by award-winning Choreographer/Director Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quiñones. A key component to the essence of the dance is known as “punking”. It is a form of expression that was exclusive to a group of underground dancers from the early 70’s in the gay community known as the Original Waack Dancers (aka ‘Punks’ or ‘The Garbo Boys’). Shabba-Doo, a heterosexual street dancer learnt the ways of this expression first handed from the “punks” and took the essence and components of what they were doing and infused his styles – Locking and Soul Dance and created what he calls “the worlds first bi-sexual street dance”.
Over 40 years of evolution, Shway has become an intricate and full body dance using complex footwork, unique hip and chest isolation’s with distinctive and ultra-powerful arm techniques that achieve flow, precision and power. Constantly crossing back and forth between the spiritual, emotional and physical levels of the dance to bring out the artist within us all that has “something to say”.
Duran was trained exclusively and qualified to teach by ‘Shway Style’ creator, Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quiñones. She has been developing her artistry in London, using the dance as a foundation to her methods. Duran is pioneering her own movement ‘Shway Style UK’, training and educating her company of elite Shway students to build a community of dancer’s that will go on to preserve Shabba-Doo’s legacy and evolve the art form of Shway.
